Use of the Welsh Language

The first language taught at Hawthorn Primary School is English.  Welsh is taught as a second language with emphasis on speaking skills before developing reading and writing skills.  The school takes advice from advisory bodies as we aim to meet the Welsh Assembly Governments aspiration to increase bilingualism in Wales. Teaching staff are encouraged to attend courses run by the Local Authority.  We have a specialist Welsh teacher who visits the school periodically to provide expert guidance and support on the scheme of work for Welsh.  Cwricwlwm Cymreig is promoted throughout the school, developing the children’s awareness of their own culture and its contribution to the world around them.
