Music and Community Links

Pupils from Year 2 to Year 6 are given the opportunity to learn either the keyboard, violin or a brass instrument.  In addition we have a very popular and busy school choir, who in the December of 2014 participated in the county wide showcase concert at St David’s Hall. They also participate regularly in community based events throughout the school year.

Links with the community continue to be a strength of the school.  People come in every week on a voluntary basis to help with the children’s learning.  These include parents, senior citizens and students from the university.  Our community policemen play an important role in delivering aspects of our Personal and Social Education programme.  There is a strong link in partnership with the Cathedral School Llandaff where Year 9 & 10 students come in to Hawthorn to assist in a reading partnership with young children.  We continue to enjoy superb support from the community for any special school events.  More than 800 visitors came to see our Christmas Concerts and a similar number attend our annual Sports Day.

We have a very hard working Friends Association who have raised money for the school through a variety of means.  These include sponsored bike rides, quiz nights, school discos and cake sales.

Parental involvement in education is a strength of the school, where special sessions are organised to explain to parents and carers aspects of the education system.

Parents also help with the running of a savings club for the children organised by Cardiff Credit Union.
